How to choose a prk surgeon
Credentials, questions, and red flags when choosing a prk surgeon.
The single biggest predictor of a great prk result isn't the technique or the city — it's the surgeon. Take the time to choose well.
Credentials that matter
- Board certification (ABPS, ABFPRS, or relevant specialty board)
- Hospital privileges at an accredited hospital
- Fellowship training in the specific area
- High annual case volume in this exact procedure
- Before-and-after portfolio with depth and consistency
Questions to ask in consultation
- How many prk cases do you do per year?
- What's your revision rate, and who revises your cases?
- Where will my surgery be performed and by whom?
- What technique would you choose for me, and why?
- Can you show me cases with starting anatomy similar to mine?
Red flags
- Pressure to book on the same day as your consultation.
- No willingness to discuss complications or revisions.
- Heavily filtered before/after photos with inconsistent lighting.
- Operating in a non-accredited facility.
- Unwillingness to put quotes and consents in writing.
